both washington and oregon kicked off recovery month with ceremonies on each side of the interstate bridge. the events featured stories from people in recovery, elected officials, and a reading of the proclamation from the governor's office. native american drumming groups played as members from the two states joined hands across the bridge and recited the serenity prayer. the festivities continued afterward with tons of food and music. members of the reno sparks indian colony enjoyed a collaboration of festivities by celebrating recovery month and national indian day. two fun-filled days of sober activities focused on celebrating recovery and cultural identity. activities included cultural presentations, dance performances, poetry readings, and a community barbecue. members of the recovery community in laredo, texas, participated in sober fiesta, 2009. in addition to local persons in recovery, treatment providers and recovery organizations from mexico were also invited to attend. the fiesta consisted of an informational fair, followed by talks from people in recovery and local leaders. th

hundreds of oregon and washington residents celebrated recovery from alcohol and drug addiction by joining hands across the interstate 5 bridge connecting the two states. during this annual event, participants celebrated recovery with ceremonies on both the vancouver and portland sides of the columbia river. citizens gathered together in york, pennsylvania, to celebrate recovery with a day at the ballpark. during the york revolution versus lancaster barnstormers ballgame, the recovery community joined together and formed the first human chain around the stadium in honor of those affected by the disease. there were fun activities along with live music, all-you-can-eat hot dogs, nachos, and soda, plus the ballgame! recovery schools and friends in madison, wisconsin, held a kickball tournament and art show for their community. attendees were able to create their own art masterpieces as well as look at other paintings, listen to stories of recovery, and enjoy each other's company. community members spread the word of recovery by wearing t-shirts promoting recovery every friday during september

so that's the -- that's not a commentator here in washington. that's the foreign minister of poland who has -- his country has a lot at stake in this debate. i would also say that we -- we have had a lot of discussions about the treaty and what's in the treaty or what would come about as a result of the treaty, but it's not as if these -- these arguments just landed here when the bill landed on the floor. we had months and months of hearings in the senate foreign relations committee. our ranking member, senator lugar, was not just there for those hearings but -- but played a leading role in reaching the point -- helping us reach the point where we are now. we have a treaty on the floor because of his good work over many, many months, and i would argue in his case many years on this issue. the same is true with the presiding officer. sitting in those hearings and asking questions of the relevant -- the relevant parties, many of them military leaders. but i would note for the record -- and i'll close with this -- that the -- the vote by the senate
